Facebook updates – Now you get to know what your friends are surfing on!

Earlier you could see what your friends was chatting on in your mobile application:

Its been a while since this function first was introduced in your mobile application. You could easily see if the person you chattet with was using the internet on a computer or their mobile device. Its been hidden there for a while, but not anymore.

As you can see in the picture, Norwegian Facebook app, you could se the words “Sent from internet” when you chatted with a friend:

You also saw when the person was logged in and on which device he used last:

Then they released the possibility to see when people was last logged in. Also which unit they had been using then. Indicated by seconds, minutes and hours. In addition a little icon for telling you which device was used. As in a mobile phone icon in the picture below.

NEWS: Now you get to know what your friends are surfing on with Facebook

In their last update for Facebook on the web, which not everyone is getting yet, they show off which device you are using in the chat column. Specified by Web or Mobile. Your friends will now know what device you are on and when you switch. We already tested it and its only taking a few seconds for it to update your device. Look in the picture below for how it looks:

So whats your thoughts on Facebook publicly showing off which device you are on? Is it useful, or could you be without it?

Whats your opinion?

Internet Marketing – Instant Beginner – Website Setup – Platform – Content – Seo – Video – Traffic

BlueHost

Just found this old video while cleaning up my youtube account, its quite funny how bad it is, what do you think?

I had a great start, going over everything you need to be a beginner in internet marketing, and how to setup your first domain/webhosting, and had plans for more videos.

My english is really bad 😛

But I know why I was discouraged to continue, since the video wasnt active because of the 10 minute limit on youtube back then, now I got unlimited time on youtube, so its great 🙂

So whats your thoughts on it?

Improving my blog – 7 Insights you can use NOW

First off, thanks for visiting my brand new blog. That’s what I think of it. The design is different, plugins have made it a better experience for you. And I am really happy for the blog and the future of it.

So what have I done to it?

1. Theme

I changed from the theme called Max Magazine by Sami Ch. It’s probably a good theme, but my modifications in the past made it look ugly and not good. I didn’t like it anymore, in addition to that I haven’t worked for the past few months, CSS didn’t load and the images on the front page didn’t show up.

Back to basics. What’s new with the Twenty Twelve theme from the WordPress team? It looks good, had to update the theme to get it to the latest version, no hassle just plain and simple update.

But I didn’t like it the standard way. I wanted to put in a new header, change the placement of the menu and some appearance.

2. Header

Made a new logo as you can see on the top, name of the blog and some icons to represent what I want to write about. Did it with a logo creation software I use and modified it further in Photoshop to get the whole header good looking. Not 100% satisfied with it, but maybe time will tell me what to do with it.

Untitled-4.jpg

Had to crop it to 960 x 250 pixels in Photoshop before I uploaded it. After I saw it on the blog, it didn’t look good. Lots of whitespace around it, and far away from the top. It was also placed under the menu. Not good.

MENU

To move the menu beneath the header you have to change a theme file.

You need to find this part of code in the Twenty Twelve theme file header.php:

<?php $header_image = get_header_image();

                               if ( ! empty( $header_image ) ) : ?>

                                               <a href=”<?php echo esc_url( home_url( ‘/’ ) ); ?>”><img src=”<?php echo esc_url( $header_image ); ?>” class=”header-image” width=”<?php echo get_custom_header()->width; ?>” height=”<?php echo get_custom_header()->height; ?>” alt=”” /></a>

                               <?php endif; ?>

And move it right above the part “<nav id=”site-navigation” class=”main-navigation” role=”navigation”>

Then the menu and header switched places. All good, but what about all that whitespace around it?

In some themes you have a special CSS field under Appearance in WordPress. Here you can put custom CSS settings, that override the theme settings, since it is loaded after everything else.

My custom CSS settings look like this now:

img.header-image {

                margin-left: -40px;

                margin-top: -24px;

                width: 1040px;

                max-width: none;

}

h1 {

                color: #ff8b02;

                font-weight: bold;

}

a {

                color: #ff8b02;

}

body {

                font-family: “Calibri”, Verdana, serif;

}

The img.header-image is for the header. Set a margin left to -40 pixels, margin to the top by -24 pixels and a width of 1040 pixels. Making it fit perfectly in the content area. But then the image was blurry, because of the 960 pixels it recommended. So I had to go back to Photoshop and get a new one like the header is today. So it’s now 1040 x 114 pixels. Perfect match.

Then I added a new color to h1 tags and links, to go away from the standard blue to more of an orange color, just to stand out of the crowd.

But still there was a gap between the content area and browsers top. I found out that in the style.css file of the theme there was a setting I could change.

This part here:

body .site {

                               padding: 0 40px;

                               padding: 0 2.857142857rem;

                               margin-top: 0px;

                               margin-top: 0rem;

                               margin-bottom: 48px;

                               margin-bottom: 3.428571429rem;

                               box-shadow: 0 2px 6px rgba(100, 100, 100, 0.3);

                }

I changed margin top to ZERO pixels and the same for the margin top rem to zero. Then the gap was gone.

The design of the blog is starting to be as I wanted it in the first place.

3. Picture of me

matsofmatsholmvik.com

Lots of bloggers like to post pictures of themselves. It’s not because they like themselves so much, but more that you can relate to them and see who is behind all these words and pictures.

I found a normal looking picture of myself from a holiday in Christmas. Used Photoshop to crop it, make a black line around it, stronger colors and added some friendly text on it. Doesn’t it look nice on the sidebar?

You can add images to the sidebar by going into the Widgets part in WordPress admin, and there should be a widget to add images in the sidebar.

4. More sidebar

My sidebar had an outdated Twitter plugin to collect my tweets and that was almost it. So I added some stuff to make the site more alive and interesting to your readers. Like adding my top posts, a search field, recent comments and my own little tag cloud so you can see what I write most about. I hope it will be useful to you.

5. Updates – damn those updates

I will recommend everyone to check on their blogs to see if there is some updates to WordPress, themes and plugins. Most of them are updated regularly and will prevent your site from crashing or be hacked. So do it today, go update. I had about 17 plugins to be updated, along with my themes and WordPress. But it went smooth, but in case something go wrong when you do it, remember to backup everything before you start. I once had to manually put in every post after a crash in the early days of WordPress, which is not fun.

6. Plugins

I missed some parts of the blog that I have on my Norwegian blogs. So I compared the plugins, and found some I had forgotten.

WordPress RelatedPosts – to get some related posts showing under the post you are reading

WPtouch – to get your blog to look good on mobile devices

ShareThis – To add sharing buttons to social media under your posts, and on the right side of the browser.

Google XML Sitemap – more about this in the nest section.

As you can see, these plugins make the site overall a much better experience to visitors, like you.

7. Sitemap

Since I found out that I had forgotten to add Google XML Sitemap, I wondered if posts even got added to the search engines. I published a post earlier today, which was in Google about 30 seconds later, which is pretty good. So no worries about that.

I made the correct changes to the plugin, so my sitemaps for pages, posts and categories was created.

Then I headed over to Bing Webmaster tools and Google Webmaster tools. I had to add my site to both places, since I hadn’t done it before. Verified my pages, so they know I own them. Then started to add all my sitemaps to them to get indexed.

I also created a Sitemap link in the footer of the page to notify other search engines about it if they want it. You can do this in the Appearance -> Editor and find the file footer.php. In the file find the part in the theme Twenty Twelve where it says “</div><!– .site-info –>” and add this text right above it “ | <a href=”http://www.matsholmvik.com/sitemapindex.xml”>Sitemap</a>“. But remember to change the href link to your sites Sitemap.

Done for today

I hope you got some insights in what can be done with your site. If there is some parts that lacks explaining, just hit me up with a comment and I will try to help you. Have a great day!

Where can I write online?

There is a lot of people wanting to know where can I write Online. The biggest category of people wondering about this is either searching for tools/writing programs that can be used while online in your browser, the second half is wondering where they can publish or get paid to write for others online. This is what we will be covering here in this blog post.

Where can I write online without the need of installing something?

To be able to write your article, blog post or school or work related writing you will at least need a webbrowser to connect to some internet services providing the writing capabilities you are searching for.

My recommendation here is to use Googles Docs to write online: https://docs.google.com/

With Google Docs you get to have a basic+ writing tool with storage space on the web, allowing you to sign in anywhere in the world to get a hold of your documents.

Where can I write online to get my work out there?

When people want to get their work out there in the world, you have a lot of options. Because the web consist only of information. A lot of it is written, but more and more is turning into videos.

The possibilities are to write for a website, an online magazine, for bloggers as a guest blogger, blogging yourself or writing for article directories. This is just some of the options you have.

I have done some writing for http://ezinearticles.com/ which is one of the largest article databases in the world. Here you can write about almost anything. Your work will be reviewed to not be a duplicate and that your spelling and grammar is correct. It’s a great place to get some people to recognize your work. It’s spread around the web, with a resource box that you can use to link back to your own webpage and they will be able to watch your profile on the site.

Where can I write online to get paid?

This is the dream for some people. You can actually sit in your home, writing for other people anywhere in the world. And there is a lot of demand for this service. If you specialize in writing about anything and write in a good way that gets people interested and engaged in your writing you can charge a lot for your work. Because most of the work in English is outsourced to low paid workers, but they also get a lower standard of the work delivered.

I write online on http://fiverr.com/ to get my name out there, on https://www.odesk.com/ to get a platform where people can easily order more work and I have setup my own page where I deliver Norwegian content here http://matsholmvik.com/products/artikler/

Fiverr is a great place since there is a lot of workers and a lot of people wanting to get things done. Articles and blog posts are very popular in addition to translating work from one language to another. So if your main language is something else than English/American I encourage you to try to setup a gig there to get some work to start with.

Odesk is more of a freelancer place to get work done in almost any category. Writers are also needed here and you can setup a profile and start getting clients or applying for work available on the job board there. You usually get a better price for your work here than on Fiverr.

The best thing is to setup your own page as I showed you above. Always thank your client for the order and when you deliver try to get a testimonial that you can use on your site. This will build up your reputation to even get more work. It’s just a basic page with what I can do, testimonials and a PayPal button to get paid. Easy to do.

I hope you got some answers to what you were looking for, and if you got any questions just get back to me in the comment section down under.

Discoverys on a Sunday

Today I had a really slow day. Just playing with my new Macbook Air 2011 and coming up with some things I needed, and something you maybe need to make easier use of your mac.

1. Rip DVDs with RipIT

I had the need to get rid of some CD/DVDs, so I though I would just put them on the harddrive. I was looking for an easy to use ripping software, what I found is RipIt, which is a software from a little company that sells it for about $20. Its really easy to use, and makes a copy of the entire DVD not any loss in quality to the movie. After you install it, a little window shows up, put in your DVD and click on rip it! Thats it! Cant be easier than this.

(Illustration of RipIt before you put in a CD/DVD)

2. Putty for Mac OS? Does it exist?

I needed to get into a server with SSH. I first thought about Putty that I use in windows to accomplish tasks through SSH. Then I found out that the Terminal in Mac OS can be used for this task. Just type in “Terminal” in  Spotlight, click on it when it shows up, and write the following to connect to the server with SSH: ssh -X username@address. Then you put in your password and is ready to do what you want.

3. Mind mapping

I use MindMeister on my iPad but wanted to test some new mind mapping software to use on my Mac. I found this site: http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/graphics-roundups/9-mind-mapping-tools-for-mac/ I explains a little about some different types and I tested the free one called FreeMind and MindNode2, of those to I got stuck using MindNode2 as it is easier to a Mac user than the other one, it blends more in and gives a cleaner look, FreeMind has some limitations that makes it unusable to me. Test the ones out at the page above to find your favorite.

I hope you enjoy my findings this sunday evening. If you got some great tips yourself on how to easy your life on the Mac, share it below in the comments and take care!

How to go to from ZERO or some connections on LinkedIn.com to about 800+ in 48 hours!

I don’t know about you, but connections, followers or friends in social media is really important to being able to spread your message and get on top of your area of interest or business.

So how about a quick way to get to over 800+ connections on LinkedIn.com?

See proof here got 500+ connections: http://no.linkedin.com/in/matsholmvik last week it was about 50-100 or something, I don’t remember.

It’s really easy. Just go to this page: Linked in connections

Click to sign up, its free, fill in name, email, password and choose the free version. Confirm your email and you are up and running.

Then go to Build Your Networks, click the link on the bottom of the page for the invite list. And download the 4 spreadsheets of emails of people willing to join your network, about 500 in each file.

Then head over to www.linkedin.com and click on CONTACTS  -> ADD Contacts. On the right side you will find a box, paste all the emails there and send invitations! Done!

Now you just have to wait for people to see your invitations, and most of them will accept your invite. And wait about 48 hours, then you will have 800+ connections like me!

BONUS:

If you would like to know how to monetize this brand new big network of your, put your name and email down under to get a short report on that:

How I got 50% more in gross sales in 3 easy steps

Ever wondered why your sales numbers got stuck? I have, and I researched ways to get it even higher. Now it’s crunched down to only 3 easy steps for you to follow. How would 50% more in sales feel to you?

Ok so lets begin.

Starting point:

You got to have some overview of what you are doing, know your numbers as they say. The numbers you need for this to work is how much daily traffic you got to your salespage, what the conversion rate is and the price of your product or service.

In my example I will keep the numbers easy.

Example:

Traffic: 1000 visitors

Conversion: 1 percent

Price of product: $19

Period: a month or 30 days.

Sum of sales is in this example $5700.

Step 1 in your 50% increase in sales: Traffic

If you bump your traffic by only 15% this would directly go to your bottom line as 15% extra profit if all the other numbers stay the same. Will i be hard for you to get that little traffic extra? What will you have to do? Write an extra blog post, submit more articles, comment more on other blogs? It will not be much, but I know you can do it.

Here are the numbers after a 15% increase in traffic:

Traffic: 1150 visitors

Conversion: 1 percent

Price of product: $19

Period: a month or 30 days.

Sum of sales is in this example $6555. (Whopping 15% extra cash in pocket! 🙂 )

Step 2 in your 50% increase in sales: Conversion

So now I dare you to increase your conversion of the salespage by 15%. Is this possible? Instead of 1% conversion you will then get 1,15 percent conversion rate. You can do this by split testing (look it up on tha internet) and changing parts of your salespage, adding new fresh images, give a better guarantee or get (more) testimonials on your page. This will help in the conversion and can easy make this little increase in the conversion rate. Go do it!

Here are the numbers after a 15% increase in conversion:

Traffic: 1150 visitors

Conversion: 1,15 percent

Price of product: $19

Period: a month or 30 days.

Sum of sales is in this example $7538. (Whopping 30%+ extra cash in pocket, than to begin with! 🙂 )

Step 3 in your 50% increase in sales: Price

Are you stuck in your pricepoint? People value products and services after price. But a little change in the price wouldnt hurt your sales. At least not just 15% increase. The price in this example will go from $19 to $21.85 and thats not much at all. People spend more than that at Mc Donalds when they opt in for a bigger meal or adds a desert. So this is maybe the easiest part of the challenge. Thats why I kept it as the last one. So lets go over our numbers again.

Here are the numbers after a 15% increase in price:

Traffic: 1150 visitors

Conversion: 1,15 percent

Price of product: $21,85

Period: a month or 30 days.

Sum of sales is in this example $8668. (Whopping 50%+ extra cash in pocket, than to begin with! 🙂 )

So how about that. We just did 3 simple steps, and now you got 50% more cash coming in every single month! How will your life change now? Do you get more time, more freedom or more cash to invest in future projects? An extra vacation?

I would love to hear from you and how your stats are after implementing this, feel free to comment about your success in the bottom of this post!

Link Building on Auto-Pilot

As many of you know, starting out is hard, you need to do a lot with your website. Getting content, building links, tweaking, adding new features, market it other ways and answer all questions and comments that come in.

With this little golden nugget I have found, you can put parts of your link building on auto-pilot. It’s called IMAutomator. This is a free service for up to 10 bookmarks per day! If you don’t write more articles than 10 per day overall on your sites this will be enough for you. But if you need to bookmark more every day, they also have a paid version which can do that for you to.

All you have to do is signup for FREE at IMAutomator, then head over to the Bookmark page and fill in the URL, keywords, description, headline and category. Then you get 3 options, make all the links in 1 day, over a period of 15 days or 30 days. This is to make it look more natural to the search engines that your site is bookmarked over time.

Then the site works for you! Easy to do.

I hope you enjoy it and if you want more tips like this subscribe to my RSS feed.
